Dorothy Garland

Dorothy Garland, 84, of Wishing Well Lane, Cumberland, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 1, 2014 at Western Maryland Regional Health System. She was born on September 9, 1929, in Everett, a daughter of the late Oscar L. and Mary Pearl (McGraw) Stanley. On September 5, 1954, in Everett, she married H. William "Bill" Garland, who preceded her in death on September 19, 1998.  She is survived by the following family: a son, Carl W. Garland, married to the former Mona "Lisa" Elliott of Cumberland, MD, a daughter, Kathleen A. wife of Steve Petrullo of Everett, and a son, Stanley J. Garland of Edinboro; three grandchildren: Jessica, Megan, and Rebecca; seven great-grandchildren; and a brother, John McGraw Stanley, of Everett.  She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Rachel E. Garland, three brothers: Charles Edwin, Oscar Lee Jr., and Milton Glenn Stanley; and two sisters: Emma Jean Ritchey, and Mary Audrey Koontz, husband, Robert “Clare” Koontz, surviving, of New Enterprise.

Mrs. Garland graduated from the Lutheran School of Nursing in Baltimore, MD and while working for the Bedford School District she received her Bachelor’s Degree in nursing from Indiana, PA. She worked for Bedford Memorial Hospital as a Registered Nurse, and retired in 1992 from the Bedford Area School District, after 30 years of service. She was a member, and Sunday school teacher, at the Milligans Cove Christian Church in Buffalo Mills.  She was an excellent seamstress, and enjoyed crocheting, knitting, and needle point.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday, April 4, 2014, at 11:00 a.m., at the Milligans Cove Christian Church, 142 Shoemaker Road, Buffalo Mills, PA with Rev. Russell Hoffman Jr. officiating.  Burial at Milligans Cove Christian Church Cemetery.  Friends will be received on Thursday, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., at the Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home in Bedford and one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church.  Those wishing may make contributions in Dorothy’s memory to: PA Breast Cancer Coalition, 2397 Quentin Road, Suite B, Lebanon, PA 17042.
