Dorothy Louise Smith, 96, passed away Wednesday, August 3, at Carrol's Rest Home. She was born on February 27, 1920, the daughter of the late Samuel Ross and Iva Ruth (Shaffer) Carney. She was preceded in death by her husband D. Robert Smith; a granddaughter Lori Anne Clark; a brother George Carney, and sisters Ruth Shaffer and Mary Howell. She is survived by her son, David Reneric Smith and his wife Jan Brahms, of Acton, CA; a daughter Sherrill, and her husband Samuel J. Wylie III of New Paris; a granddaughter Beth Anne Clark, and her fiancé Christopher Reichard of New Paris, and three nieces, Sandra James, Lula Campbell and Collette Day.
After high school, she was employed as a legal secretary by Attorney John Minnick, and also worked at Bedford Milling and the Pennsylvania Department of Highways. She married Robert Smith on January 11, 1941. They lived briefly in Wolfsburg before moving to Cessna and establishing Misty Meadows Farm. In 1952, they began breeding purebred Guernsey cattle, eventually showing their livestock as far west as Waterloo, Iowa. In 1999, Robert and Dorothy were inducted into the Pennsylvania Guernsey Breeders’ Golden Guernsey Walk of Fame. On the farm, Dorothy worked alongside her husband, in the barn and the fields. She was an accomplished seamstress, and especially esteemed, by friends as well as family, for her cooking and baking, which she continued into her nineties. Dorothy and Robert attended St. Paul's Reformed Church at Cessna for over 40 years, where she enjoyed singing in the choir and served as financial secretary. More recently, they attended Wolfsburg United Methodist Church. The family is deeply grateful to the staff at Carrol's Rest Home for the care and affection they gave Dorothy, and to the Home Nursing Agency Hospice personnel who cared for her in her final days. She will be deeply missed.
Funeral Services will be held private. Arrangements by the Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home, in Bedford.
