Doris E. Defibaugh Berkey 97, of New Paris died Thursday, February 13, 2025. She was born on May 10, 1927 in West St. Clair Township, a daughter of the late Roy and Myrtle (Keiper) Nunamaker. She married D. Glen Defibaugh on April 14, 1949 and he preceded her in death on December 8, 1984. She then married Ernest Berkey on April 12, 1997 and he preceded her in death on June 15, 2022. She is survived by three daughters: Eileen Harbaugh widow of Ronald, of Fishertown; Debra Wise and husband Tim, of York; and Cheryl Berkey and husband Rodney, of New Paris; five step-children: Phyllis Berkey, of Johnstown, Joyce Calhoun and husband Guy, of Bedford, Betty Whetstone and husband Dan, of New Paris, Janice Bence and husband Brian, of Virginia, and Sharon Stone and husband Michael, of Ohio; she was affectionately known as “Nana” to: 8 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; 9 step-grandchildren; 11 step-great-grandchildren; a sister Barbara Bender widow of Harry, of Windber; and many loving nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by five siblings: Chelsea Rininger, Marietta Dunlap, Harry Russell, Cyril Nunamaker, and Donald Nunamaker.
Doris was a member of the Faith Brethren Bible Church, and earlier in life, she was a very active member of the Alum Bank United Methodist Church. She was a wonderful Christian example to her family and all that knew her. For many years she taught Sunday School, sang in the church choir, and was involved with mission work. The family would like to extend their thanks to Heartland Hospice for the care Doris received.
Funeral service will be held Tuesday, February 18, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at the Faith Brethren Bible Church, 120 Chestnut Ridge Road, New Paris, with Pastor James Espenshade officiating. Burial will be private at Pleasantville Cemetery. Friends will be received on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m., until the hour of the service at the church. Arrangements by the Timothy A.
