December 20, 1929 — March 24, 2015

Doris D. Kuhns, 85, of Frederick, MD, formerly of Bedford, PA, passed away Tuesday, March 24, 2015, at Country Meadows of Frederick. She was born on December 20, 1929, in Piedmont, WV, a daughter of the late James Harold and Beryl Jean (Morrison) Darkey. On March 18, 1953, in Wilkinsburg, PA, she married David C. Kuhns who preceded her in death on May 4, 2007.  She is survived by the following family: three sons, David H. Kuhns of Cumberland Center, ME, married to Patti Lerwick; Douglas B. Kuhns, of Frederick, MD, married to the former Janet Potter; and Dana E. Kuhns, of Chalfont, PA, married to the former Joanna Shaulis; two sisters, Carolyn, wife of Maurice Wyman of Derby, CT; and Elizabeth, wife of Ken Sadeghian, of Madison, WI; and a brother, James Randall Darkey of Tolland, CT.  She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Debra Leigh Kuhns and sister-in-law, Christine Darkey.  Doris had 7 grandchildren, all of whom have very fond memories of times spent together.  She also had 6 great-granddaughters, and 1 great great-granddaughter.  In addition, “Aunt Dossie” will be sadly missed by her nieces and nephews.

Doris graduated from Beverly High School in Beverly, WV, in 1947 and then graduated from Davis and Elkins College in Elkins, WV, in 1951.  She then became a certified physical therapist at D.T. Watson School of Physical Therapy in Pittsburgh, PA.  She also received her teacher’s certification and taught for several years in WV before a family move brought her to Bedford in 1965.  Doris retired from teaching at Bedford High School where she had taught biology for over 20 years.  She also worked many summers and weekends at Bedford Memorial Hospital as a physical therapist.  In her leisure time, Doris could always be found working in her flower gardens.  She loved to travel and had many wonderful memories of her trips to Aruba with her siblings.  She developed a passion for art and painting, sharing many of her projects with her family.  She loved to bake and always had goodies around when her grandchildren visited.

A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, April 26 at 2:00 p.m. at the Bedford Presbyterian Church in Bedford, PA.  Arrangements by the Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home in Bedford.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Davis & Elkins College, the Audubon Society, the National Wildlife Federation, or to a charity of your choice.  Our online guest book is available at www.berkebilefuneralhome.com.
