Donald B. “Dude” Wertz, 94, of Bedford Valley, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, October 31, 2010, at Pennknoll Village Nursing Home. He was born on September 14, 1916, in Bedford Twp, a Son, of the late Ambrose C. and Cora E. (Howsare) Wertz. On October 16, 1950 in Winchester, VA, he married Charlotte J. Scritchfield who preceded him in death on August 7, 2008. He is survived by five children: Victorine J. wife of Kenneth Williams, Kay L. wife of Terry Williams, Donna L. wife of Herman Rhodes, Rex A. Wertz married to the former Linda Brallier and S. Paul Wertz and fiancée Dee Rowan all of Bedford, nine grandchildren: Ellen, David, Shelley, Stacey, Matthew, Mark, Allen, Amanda, and Krystal, 14 great grandchildren, two sisters: Hilda Hixon and, Marguerite Whitfield both of Bedford, two brothers: Glenn A. Wertz of Manns Choice and Leroy Wertz of Ellicott City, MD. He was preceded in death by one brother: Lloyd A.Wertz, three sisters: Marion C. Miller, Eleanor Mizenko and Patricia Martin.
Dude was a WWII veteran serving with the Army Air Corps. He retired in 1978 from Harry E. Karns Contracting. He was a member of Providence Lutheran Church, Bedford Moose Lodge # 480, Legion of the Moose #84, American Legion Post # 945 and a Charter member, oldest and founding member of the Bedford Valley Rod & Gun Club.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, November 3, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel at Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home, in Bedford with Pastor David Wright Officiating. Burial at Bortz Lutheran Cemetery with full military rites conducted by the Fort Bedford Honor Guard. Friends will be received on Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. and on Wednesday 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
