Donald B. “Smiley” Motto, 85, of Crissman Road, New Paris, went to be with his Lord and Savior surrounded by his family, on January 13, 2014, at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, in Pittsburgh. He was born on November 2, 1929, in Bedford, a son of the late E. Bruce, and Marie (Wertz) Motto. On May 5, 1955, in Fishertown, he married Anna Louise (McCreary) Motto. They would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in May. He is survived by two daughters: Dena L. wife of William R. Diehl, of New Paris, and Lori D., wife of John W. Rose, of Johnstown; one granddaughter, Morgan wife of Lorne Daugherty, of Bedford, and two very special great-grandchildren: Blake and Sadie Daugherty; a sister M. Pauline Hershberger, of Bedford, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Donald Jeffrey, three brothers: Edwin, George, and Dean Motto; and a sister, Mildred Suter.
Mr. Motto served in the Army during the Korean War. He was a member of the Chestnut Ridge Independent Fellowship Church where he was very active on the board and involved in their many activities. He retired as a truck driver from Kelly Springfield Tire after 20 years. He had a love for the outdoors, enjoyed hunting and fishing, and was a member of the Chestnut Ridge Bow & Gun Club and the Bedford American Legion Post #113. He loved his family, and was a devoted husband, father, grandfather. He adored his granddaughter and great-grandchildren and was known for his pleasant personality, handshakes, and always had a smile.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, January 17, 2015, at 11:00 a.m., at the Chestnut Ridge Independent Fellowship Church, with Rev. Dan Oldham, officiating. Burial at Fishertown Cemetery. Friends will be received on Friday, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., at the Chestnut Ridge Independent Fellowship Church. Arrangements by the Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home, in Bedford.
