David I. O’Brien Jr., 95, of Bedford, died on Monday, February 23, 2026 at his residence. He was born on September 8, 1930 in New Oxford, a son of the late David I. O’Brien Sr. and Annette Elizabeth (Felty) O’Brien. On August 21, 1965 in Bedford, he married Alice “Georgine” (Warsing) O’Brien and she preceded him in death on January 16, 2025. He is survived by three children: Lisa K. O’Brien-Guyer and companion Rick Goforth of Fayetteville, NC; David I. O’Brien III and wife Louisa Jo of Bedford; and Lori Christine O’Brien of San Francisco, CA; eight grandchildren: Kylie Davis, Ryan Guyer, Kahlor O’Brien, David Goforth, Kohbe O’Brien, Darrian Goforth, Kamran O’Brien, and Kiara O’Brien; two great-grandchildren: Aslinn and Aria Heverly; six brothers: George O’Brien widower of Berle of Hanover, Patrick O’Brien widower of Delores of York, Robert O’Brien and wife Linda of Abbottstown, Daniel O’Brien and wife Barbara of East Berlin, Fred O’Brien and wife Linda of Abbottstown and Frank O’Brien and wife Georgia of Mechanicsburg; five sisters-in-law: Martha Hall widow of Robert of Hopewell, Mildred Weaver widow of Donald of Mariana, Lyda Taylor widow of Eldie of Breezewood, Julia Layman and husband Robert of Everett, and Margaret “Peggy” Teeters of Breezewood; and one brother-in-law: John Warsing and wife Harriet of Harrisonville. He was preceded in death by four sisters: Mary E. “Sue” Nugent and husband James, Dorothy H. “Dot” Hertz and husband Earl, Julia J. O’Brien, and Ann Louise Kendrick; five brothers: Joseph “Ben” O’Brien and wife Josephine, Edward O’Brien and wife Mary Lou, John O’Brien and wife Josephine, Michael O’Brien widow Betty who survives of New Oxford, and Lawrence O’Brien widow Joan who survives of Abbottstown; two sisters-in-law: Elsie Garlock and her husband Larry, and Susan Weist widower Seibert who survives of Breezewood; and one brother-in-law: Dan Warsing.
David is a proud Air Force veteran, serving from 1949 to 1952, where he was a radio and radar mechanic for F84 Fighter Jets. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Math Education from Shippensburg University and also obtained his Master’s degree in Math Education from the University of Georgia. He was a math teacher at Bedford High School from 1958 to 1993, retiring after 35 years. Over his tenure, David taught all math subjects at Bedford, initially starting with 8th grade math in 1958, then senior math, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and pre-calculus. In addition to his teaching, he also initiated taking Bedford math students to math competitions, becoming an assistant wrestling coach from 1959 to 1966, volunteering with the softball team, the Chairman of Class Advisors from 1958 to 1964 and again from 1971 to 1977,
and was the Class Advisor to the classes of 1964 and 1977. He was proudest of the impact he had on the students he taught, helping them achieve their goals not only in school, but also in life.
After his retirement, David continued his love of working with students by teaching Math at both Allegheny Community College campuses. He was inducted into the Bedford Area School District Hall of Excellence in 2025. He was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church, a 74-year member of the American Legion Post # 113, the Bedford Elks Lodge #1707, the Pennsylvania State Education Association, and the National Education Association.
Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, February 26, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Thomas Catholic Church in Bedford with Father Richard Tomkosky Celebrant. Burial at St. Thomas Catholic Cemetery with full military rites conducted by the Fort Bedford Honor Guard. Friends will be received on Wednesday from 4 – 7 p.m. at the Timothy A.
