Cw02 Roderick Kim Funston

CW02 Roderick Kim Funston USN retired, 70, of Buffalo Mills, passed away on Thursday, June 6, 2024. He was born on December 30, 1953 in Hagerstown, MD to the late Walter H. and Christine (Hawbaker) Funston. He is survived by his wife of 25 years Mary Jane (Harbaugh) Funston. Roderick leaves behind his 4 children Kimberly (Tony) Funston Leonard of Keystone Heights, FL; Roderick K Funston Jr of Clay County; Melissa White of Middleburg; Seanne Funston of Middleburg, FL. He had eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one brother, Rhett (Kimberly) Funston of Buffalo Mills.  He was preceded in death by one sister, Robin Hillegas.

He graduated from Bedford High School in 1972. Following the path of his father who also retired from the Navy, Roderick served his country for the next 21 years with time stationed in NAS Oceana, VA, NAS NATC Pax River, MD and NAS Cecil Field, FL. During his naval career he worked his way up the ranks to Chief Warrant Officer 02.  He spent many tours abroad on the USS Hancock, USS Enterprise, USS America, USS Saratoga and in Diego Garcia, Indian Ocean.  CW02 Roderick Kim Funston bravely served his country during the Vietnam War and worked as a warfare specialist for Dessert Storm in Kuwait.  Roderick alongside his wife, Mary Jane enjoyed their retirement years with their shih-tzu’s, Sheila and Sammy on the family farm in Buffalo Mills. He loved hunting, fishing, bingo and farm life. He was a hilarious story teller and loved to be the center of attention. He was larger than life and had the gift of gab. Roderick was also a proud Veteran and always made time for other Veteran’s. He will be missed by everyone.
