Clay E. Leydig

Bedford

Clay E. Leydig 87, of Bedford, died Thursday, July 7, 2022 at UPMC Altoona Hospital.  He was born on April 27, 1935 in Cumberland, MD a son of the late Raymond Elwood “Benny” and Laoma Mary (Hyre) Leydig.  On November 30, 1963 in Chaneysville he married Vera H. (Trail) Leydig who preceded him in death on March 16 2019.  He is survived by a son Michael E. Leydig.  He was preceded in death by two brothers: Glenn and Elwood Leydig.

Clay was a graduate of Hyndman High School and was fiercely loyal to his alma matter. He was a talented 3rd baseman and a prospect of the Brooklyn Dodgers out of high school, but ultimately committed to the U.S. Marine Corps.  Clay went on to serve in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1952 to 1955 during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged at the rank of Sergeant. When he returned to Bedford he became the President of the United Telephone Company and retired in 1997.  A year later he went back to work installing most of the cell phone towers around the surrounding area.  Clay enjoyed going to Deep Creek Lake, and water skiing well into his 60’s, and traveling the United States and abroad.  His best traveling was done with his son Michael through out the Pacific Northwest.  An avid hunter and fisherman, he was a member of the Bedford Sportsman’s Club, as well as the Fort Bedford VFW Post #7527, Flickers, and the Bedford Presbyterian Church.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 13, 2022 at 11:00 a.m., in the Chapel at the Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home, in Bedford, with Rev. Jack Miller officiating.  Burial at Mt. Zion Cemetery, in Chaneysville.  Friends will be received on Tuesday, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., at the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers contributions can be made in Clay’s name to: Bedford Presbyterian Church, 145 S.
