Clair V. Winegardner, 92, of Market Street, Schellsburg, died Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at UPMC Altoona Hospital with his children at his side. He was born on September 7, 1921, in Schellsburg, a son of the late Clyde and Ida (Berkey) Winegardner. On January 17, 1942, in Winchester, VA, he married Vera E. (Cuppett) Winegardner who preceded him in death on November 12, 2011. He is survived by a son, Tom Winegardner married to the former Helen Morral, and a daughter, Carol Winegardner, a grandson, David Winegardner; all of Schellsburg, a sister, Shirley widow of Clay "Dick" Miller, of Schellsburg, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three brothers: John, James, and Lewis, “Chub” Winegardner.
Clair and his wife Vera owned and operated Winegardner’s Garage for over 55 years. He was the last surviving founding member, their 1st engineer, and life member of the Shawnee Valley Volunteer Fire Company. He was the oldest resident of Schellsburg and a board member of the Schellsburg Union Cemetery Association. Clair enjoyed spending time on his farm and working with his cattle.
Funeral Services will be held on Monday, May 12, 2014, at 3:00 p.m., in the Chapel, at the Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home, in Bedford, with Rev. Doreen Griffith, officiating. Burial at Schellsburg Cemetery. Friends will be received on Friday, from 2-8 p.m., and one hour prior to the service on Monday at the funeral home.
