Charles W. “Charlie” Fisher, 92, of Mallard Drive, Bedford, died Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at Pennknoll Village Nursing Home. He was born on November 1, 1921, in Altoona, a son of the late John E. and Minnie Bell (Gates) Fisher. On August 15, 1942, in Altoona, he married Betty E. (Blyler) Fisher who preceded him in death on July 10, 2003. He is survived by a son, Thomas Fisher and wife Shirley of Reading, four grandchildren, Duane, and Chuck, of Pottstown, Troy Allen, of Texas, and Beverly Ann Whaley, of Tampa, FL; one step-granddaughter: Desiree Moyer; three great-grandchildren; two step-great grandchildren, two brothers, John E. Fisher Jr., of Hollidaysburg, Dennis B. Fisher, of Jacksonville, NC, and a sister Barbara Nichols, of Cincinnati, OH. He was preceded in death by two infant grandchildren; a daughter, Bonnie Lee, three brothers, Donald, Paul, and E. Wayne Fisher, five sisters, Katherine Henry, Arlene Engel, Yuvette Orischak, June Lightner, and Lilly Mae Heffner.
Charlie was a 1st Lieutenant, in the Army during WWII. He flew 86 missions, in a P47 Thunderbolt in the European Theater. He worked as a Civil Engineer for Gannett, Fleming, Corddry, and Carpenter Engineers, in Harrisburg and retired in 1980. He was a former member of the Bedford Elks Lodge #1707, and loved golfing, hunting, and coin collecting.
Funeral Services will be held on Monday, July 21, 2014, at 11:00 a.m., in the Chapel, at the Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home, in Bedford, with Pastor John Bennett officiating. Burial at Bedford County Memorial Park, with full military rites conducted by the Fort Bedford Honor Guard. Friends will be received on Sunday, from 6-8 p.m. and from 10:00 a.m., until the hour of the service on Monday at the funeral home. Our online guest book is available at www.berkebilefuneralhome.com.
