Charles M. Diehl

Charles M. “Charlie” Diehl, 86, of Everett, died Saturday, April 12, 2014 at Donahoe Manor Nursing Home. He was born on July 17, 1927, in Cumberland, MD a son of the late Glenn W. and Edith M. (Brown) Diehl. On July 14, 1950, in Cumberland, MD, he married Thelma (Clingerman) Diehl who survives along with a son, Dr. Steven Diehl of Martinsburg, two granddaughters, Erika Diehl of Portland, OR, and Amy Diehl of St. Cloud, FL; a sister, Lillian Ruth, of Rome, NY; and two brothers, Harry Diehl and wife Charlotte, of Everett, and James Diehl, of Springfield, VA.   He was preceded in death by a sister Roseanne Diehl, and a brother Darrell Diehl.

He was a graduate of Fort Hill High School, Cumberland, MD, class of 1945.  Charlie served in the Navy during WWII in the Pacific.  In 1951 he graduated as a Civil Engineer from West Virginia University.

His employment from February, 1951 to April, 1956: B&O Railroad Co., Pittsburgh, PA; MD State Highway Dept., Cumberland, MD; and Erdner Engineering, Pittsburgh, PA; May 1956, with Western MD Railway, Cumberland, MD and later to Hagerstown, MD; and continuing with Chessie System in Huntington, WV.  He retired in April of 1983 in Baltimore, MD, as an Engineer of Structures & Piers with CSX Corporation.

During retirement at “the farm” in the Artemas area, he enjoyed volunteering--planning expansion for the Fairview Cemetery and updating records at the Bethel Church Cemetery.  Charlie was a member of the Bedford United Methodist Church; a member of the Ali Ghan Shrine, Cumberland, MD; and was granted the 50-year Masonic Service Award, September, 2013, by Bedford Lodge No. 320; also a member of the Bedford American Legion.

A graveside service will be private and held at the convenience of the family.  If friends so desire, contributions may be made in memory of Charlie to the Bedford United Methodist Church, 132 East John St., Bedford, PA 15522.  Arrangements by the Timothy A.
