Betty J. (Sipes) Berkey

Betty J. Berkey, 83, of Osterburg, died on Friday, September 15, 2017 at UPMC Altoona Hospital surrounded by her family. She was born on October 20, 1933, in Johnstown, a daughter of the late Norman and Iva (Lehman) Sipes. On October 13, 1951, in Cumberland, MD, she married Ray Berkey and he survives along with the following family: a daughter, Roxanne McDonald and husband Rick, of Osterburg, a son, Rodney E. Berkey married to former Cheryl, Defibaugh, of New Paris; a daughter, Deborah K. Deremer, of New Paris; seven grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and one step-great grandson; four sisters: Shirley Miller, of Osterburg, Beverly Harr, of Osterburg, Linda Thompson, of St. Thomas, and Susan Simons, of Bedford.  She was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Bill Sipes, and one sister, Alice McDannell.

Betty was a member of the Weyant United Methodist. She worked at various places including Five Gables in Cessna, The shoe factory in Schellsburg, and Fay’s Candies in Alum Bank. She also cleaned homes and was a caretaker for many years. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother and enjoyed being with her family and the time spent at the Berkey campground.

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, September 19, 2017, at 1:00 p.m., in the Chapel, at the Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home, in Bedford, with Pastor John Mackey and Pastor Kurt Knobel officiating.  Burial will be private.  Those wishing can make memorial contributions in Betty’s name to the Weyant United Methodist Church, 1423 Heritage Road, Osterburg, Pa 16667.
