Bert R. Sulcer

Bert Reid Sulcer, Captain, US Navy Retired, of 835 S. Juliana St., Bedford, departed this life on Friday March 5, 2010.  He was born September 1, 1935 in Palestine, Arkansas, the first child of Bert Reid Sulcer and Mariella (Clarke) Sulcer.  Captain Sulcer’s military career began as an Airman in the US Air Force, serving as an operating room technician for two years.

Following his graduation from St. Margaret’s Hospital School of Nursing, Kansas City, Kansas, he was commissioned an Ensign in the US Navy where he served for 25 years.  During his tenure he earned a BS Degree from Texas Christian University and a MS Degree from the University of Memphis.  Over these years he served as Operating Room Supervisor in several major Naval Medical Facilities and in subsequent years in key administrative positions in Naval Medical Commands, both in the US and abroad.  Among his numerous service awards was the military Legion of Merit.  He was preceded in death by his parents and his life partner, Dr. Gary Ballman.  He is survived by his sister, Susanne Hill and nephew Clarke Hill, both of Fayetteville, Arkansas, and a devoted following of military and civilian friends both locally and worldwide.  His ashes and those of Dr. Ballman will be interred on the Island of Saint Barth.
