Alvin D. Hite

January 17, 2014 — September 18, 2009

Alvin Dewayne "Jinx" Hite, 95, of Cumberland Valley, died Friday, September 18, 2009 at his grandson’s residence.  He was born on January 17, 1914, in Cumberland Valley, a son of the late Jay C. and Elizabeth (Nave) Hite.  On September 20, 1940 in Cumberland, MD, he married Edna V. Elliott who preceded him in death on December 14, 2008.  He is survived by a daughter, Bonnie L. wife of John Suveg of Bedford, a grandson, John W. Ryan and wife Kimberly of Cumberland Valley, a sister, Vera (Hite) Williams of Cumberland, MD, and many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by one brother Randolph Hite and one sister Margaret Hite.

He was a member of the Bethel Methodist Church in Cumberland Valley where he served on the board as a Superintendent and with the Church Cemetery Association.  He retired from Morris Equipment in Everett, and worked for many farmers over his lifetime fixing their equipment.  He was a member of Roses hunting camp, a lifetime member of NRA and lifetime member and trustee of the Cumberland Valley Fire Department. He helped the fire department with their chicken barbeques and will always be remembered for making ice cream.  He also served as a Township Supervisor for Cumberland Valley.  After his brother Randolph lost his life in a farming accident he became a very special uncle and great uncle to Harry Hite and his wife Jeannie and their three daughters Jennifer, Jodi, and Jesse.  “Jinx” touched the lives of everyone he knew, you could never talk to him without a smile, and he was a wonderful husband, father to his daughter Bonnie and grandfather to his grandson Johnnie, but also a wonderful brother in law to his wife’s brother and sisters who lost their father Clyde Elliott at a young age.
