Alan Hershberger, 80, of Pointe Vedra Beach, FL, formerly of Bedford and Bethlehem died Thursday, April 18, 2012, at his residence in Florida. He was born on December 7, 1931, in Bedford, a son, of the late Harold and Maud (O'Shea) Hershberger. On June 21, 1953 in Bedford he married Barbara Ann Nevitt who survives along with a son, Andrew Alan Hershberger married to the former Tara Sullivan, twin grandsons Scott and Nicholas, all of New Hampshire, a sister, Catherine Loughrige, a nephew Alan Craig Louhrige, and niece Lisa Loughrige Soloman all of Missouri.
Alan graduated from Bedford High School in 1949. He earned a Bachelors of Arts Degree from Gettysburg College in 1953 where he was a member of the football and wrestling team, and was the Middle Atlantic Champion at 167 lbs in his junior and senior years. While at Gettysburg he was elected to Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities and co-recipient of the Student Christian Association Beachem Award for Commendable Scholarship, Athletic Ability and Christian Character. In 2004, he was inducted into Gettysburg’s Hall of Athletic Honor that was established to give outstanding athletes the special recognition they deserve. He served in the United States Air Force, and was honorably discharged after two years of active duty. He graduated from Temple University Law School in Philadelphia in 1961, and was admitted to the Delaware Bar in 1965 from which he retired in 2002. During his career, Alan was employed by the DuPont Company in Wilmington, Delaware, and Bethlehem Steel Corporation in Bethlehem, where he served as Tax Counsel and later as Director of Tax Planning and Appeals. After retirement he and his wife Barbara moved to Ponte Verde Beach, Florida, where he was a member of the Ponte Vedra Presbyterian Church.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, April 25, at 1:00 p.m. in the Chapel at the Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home, in Bedford, with Pastor Raymond Short officiating. Burial at Bedford Cemetery. Friends will be received one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the funeral home.
