Walter H. Kern, 80, of Schellsburg, went to his heavenly home on Saturday, January 5, 2019 after a battle with cancer. He was born on April 2, 1938, in Dayton, OH, a son of the late Ralph H. and Mary (Mitchell) Kern. On March 4, 1961, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Bedford, he married Donna (Price) Kern who survives along with the following family: a daughter, Pamela (Kern) Cover of Schellsburg; a son, Michael A. Kern of Mechanicsville, MD; five grandchildren: Ashley, Taylor, and Nathan Kern, Steven and Rebecca Cover; one great granddaughter Camille Kern; one sister, Judy Carey and husband Carl, of Brookville, IN. He was preceded in death by a son, Steven Kern.
Walter was a member of the Time Ministries Church and Spring Meadow Church. He was a SGT and worked as air traffic controller for the U.S. Marine Corps. After being discharged from the military in 1959 he continued to work as an air traffic controller at the National Airport in Washington, D.C. In 1965 he entered the apprenticeship of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and retired after 38 years. He lived in Clinton, MD before moving with his wife to Schellsburg in 2001. Walt was a good father and grandfather and the grandchildren knew him as Pop Pop. He loved doting over his wife, the love of his life, working in the yard and around the house.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 15, 2019 at 12:00 p.m. at Lee Funeral Home in Clinton, MD, with Pastor Dan Stultz officiating, burial at Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery, in Cheltenham, MD. Friends will be received from 11:00 a.m. until the hour of the service at Lee Funeral Home. Local arrangements by the Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home, in Bedford.
