Mariellen Land Obituary

Mariellen (Beegle) Land, 94, of Friends Cove, PA, died Wednesday, December 26, 2018 at UPMC Bedford Memorial Hospital surrounded by her family. She was born on March 12, 1924 in Friends Cove, daughter of the late Joseph A. S. and Grace (Hunt) Beegle.   On August 2, 1947 she married Robert E. Land, Sr. at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, a marriage that lasted over 70 years until his death, September 25, 2017.  Mariellen was also preceded in death by her siblings, Paul (infant), Ada, Ruth, J. Allan, H. Carl, and Lois.  She is survived by a large and loving family including a daughter, Rebecca Fager and husband Alan, of York;  a son, Robert E. Land Jr. and wife Helen, of Los Angeles, CA; a daughter, Frances Locati and husband Ronald, of York; and a daughter, Jamie Brambley and husband Herb, of Breezewood; six grandchildren: Emily Bradfield and husband Scott, Betsy Latone and husband Kevin, Olivia and Elizabeth Land, Justie Brambley and wife Angie, and Tom Brambley and wife Sarah; eight great-grandchildren: Robert, Jack, Brooke, Landon, Zeke, Aliza, Ella, and Ike; and many nieces and nephews of multiple generations.  Additionally, Mariellen is survived by many who she made feel like family, welcoming them into her home with warmth and kindness.

Mariellen attended Biddle School, a one room schoolhouse near her parents’ farm in Friends Cove and graduated from Bedford High school at the age of 15. After graduation, she attended Marion College in Virginia with her sister Ruth, and at 19, completed her B.A. in sociology at Dickinson College, where she was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha. After college, she became a social worker in Lancaster County. In 1947 she was admitted to Smith College to pursue a masters degree in social work, but chose to marry her lifelong love, Robert Land, and return to Friends Cove where he had begun his career as a farmer after WW II.  In addition to caring for her husband and family, Mariellen was active in the community through the Ladies’ Aid Society, church activities, collection for the March of Dimes, caring for her elderly parents, and baking much sought after pies for the Bedford Memorial Hospital snack bar. A lifelong reader, Mariellen had wide ranging interests from the works of Shakespeare to fossil discoveries in China. She possessed a keen intellect and a wry sense of humor to the end.

Funeral services will be held Monday, December 31, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 138 Ott Town Road, Everett, with Pastor Judy Simonson officiating.  Burial will follow at St. Mark’s Lutheran Cemetery.  Friends will be received on Monday, from 10:00 a.m., until the hour of the service at the church.  Arrangements are by the Timothy A.
