Marguerite L. Whitfield, 92, of Bedford, died on Tuesday, April 16, 2019, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on January 7, 1927 in Bedford, a daughter of the late Ambrose C. and Cora E. (Howsare) Wertz. On October 21, 1946, in Bedford, she married Alonza B. Whitfield and he preceded her in death on January 17, 1993. She is survived by the following family: a son, Ronald “Ben” Whitfield and wife Gwyneth, of Bedford, a son, David “Roy” Whitfield, of Bedford, a daughter, Margaret “Peggy” Zembower and husband John, of Bedford, a daughter, Susan B. Dunkle and husband Jack, of Everett, a daughter, Carol A. Wright and husband Andrew, of Lancaster, a daughter, Shirley “Jean” Brugh and husband Keith, of New Paris, a son, John M. Whitfield, of Bedford, a daughter, Nancy Jo Barnes and husband Brian, of Bedford, and a daughter, Rebecca D. Brallier and partner Edwin Bracken Jr., of Bedford; 21 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; two brothers: Glenn “Murf” Wertz of Manns Choice, and Leroy Wertz, of Elizabeth City, MD. She was preceded in death by a great granddaughter, Lilly Elaine Earnest, two brothers: Lloyd and Donald “Dude” Wertz; four sisters: Eleanor Mazinko, Marian Miller, Patricia Martin, and Hilda Hixon.
Marguerite was a member of the St. Thomas Catholic Church. Throughout her life, she enjoyed square dancing, line dancing, gardening, flowers, feeding birds, reading, solving crossword puzzles, playing scrabble, and “Words with Friends”, and her time working at Barnes Body Shop. In the last several years, she enjoyed sewing quilts and pillow cases for nursing homes, veterans, and hospitalized children. Most of all, she treasured the time spent with her family.
Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, April 23, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at the St. Thomas Catholic Church in Bedford with Father Richard Tomkosky Celebrant, burial at Bedford County Memorial Park. Friends will be received on Monday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home in Bedford.
