John E. “Gene” Shoemaker 88, of Friends Cove, died on Wednesday, November 1, 2017 at Homewood at Martinsburg.  He was born on July 7, 1929 in Bedford, a son of the late Kenneth K. and Marion (Beegle) Shoemaker.  On December 10, 1948 in Bedford, he married Mary E. “Liz” (Boor) Shoemaker who preceded him in death on February 9, 2016.  He is survived by a daughter Linda McCauley and husband William, of York; a grandson Edward McCauley and wife Rebekah of York; two great-grandchildren: Preston and Ella; and a brother Jack Shoemaker and wife Barbara of Bedford.  He was preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn Porter.

Gene was a lifelong farmer residing on the family farm in Friends Cove. He was a school bus driver for 55 years and during that time he became a school bus contractor for the Bedford Area School District. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, November 6, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel at the Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home in Bedford, with Pastor Paul Claycomb officiating.
