James E. “Nick” Wise 78, of Echo Vale Drive, Bedford died August 19, 2016 at his residence. He was born on January 14, 1938 in Bedford, a son of the late Donald F. and Virginia (Milburn) Wise. On June 26, 1960 in Bedford, he married Joyce (Will) Wise who survives along with three sons: Steve Wise married to the former Lisa Foor, of Everett, Scott Wise, married to the former Jennifer Nichols, of Williamsburg, VA, and Mark Wise married to the former Karen Voltz, of St. Thomas; seven grandchildren: Tyler Wise and wife Ashley, Chelsi Perrin and husband Brad, Brittany, Madison, Emma, Noah, and Micah Wise; four great-grandchildren: Olivia and Graeme Wise, Bryson and Paisley Perrin; and a brother, William F. Wise, married to the former Francis Fox, of Bedford. He was preceded in death by two grandchildren: Anna and Kaleb Wise.
Nick graduated from Bedford High School in 1955, and retired from Kennametal after 39 years. He was a PIAA baseball and basketball official, Jr. High. Volunteer baseball, and Little League Coach. Nick and Joe Allen were instrumental in bringing little league baseball to Bedford in the early 1970’s. Nick found great joy working with kids of all ages teaching them the game of baseball, and most importantly the fundamentals of pitching. He was a member of the Bedford Elks Lodge #1707, Bedford Elks Men’s Golf Leagues, and the Retired Kennametal Men’s Group. Nick enjoyed the outdoors, including hunting turkey and deer, fishing, and golf. Most importantly he loved the time he spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 22, 2016 at 11:00 a.m., in the Chapel, at the Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home, in Bedford, with Rev. Raymond E. Short, officiating. Burial at Bedford County Memorial Park. Friends will be received on Sunday, from 2-4 and 6-8 at the funeral home.
