Helen C. Smouse, 101, of Bedford, died Sunday, April 30, 2017 at her residence.  She was born on April 9, 1916 in Roaring Spring, a daughter of the late William and Nellie (Robinson) Carper.  She is survived by a son, William J. Smouse, and a daughter, Cathy Vent and husband Daniel, both of Bedford; four grandchildren: Shane Vent and wife Dana, Erin McGill and husband Scott, Justin Vent and wife Kelli, and Jeremy Vent and wife Laura; and eleven great-grandchildren: Zachary, Riley, Levi, Joshua, Jared, Jada, Alexa, Bella, Isaac, Leah, and Nathan.  She was preceded in death by her former husband, W. Joe Smouse, and a twin sister, Margaret Carper.

Helen was a graduate of Roaring Spring High School, and then graduated from Grove City College in 1938 with majors in Music and English.  She then taught at Roaring Spring, Replogle in New Enterprise, and Bedford School District.  She was a member of the Bedford United Methodist Church and directed the Choir for over 30 years. She then attended the Bedford Church of the Brethren where she played the piano and organ.  She was the former treasurer for the Bedford Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and was active in the Bridge Flights, and ladies golf association at the Bedford Elks Country Club.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 3, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel at the Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home in Bedford, with Pastor John Bennett officiating.
