Gerald R. "Perk" Wakefield, 87, of Bedford died on September 16, 2017 at Donahoe Manor Nursing Home. He was born on July 12, 1930, in Greenwood, a son of the late Robert A. and Sarah (Shutt) Wakefield. On June 25, 1961, in Bedford, he married Janet (Davidson) Wakefield who survives along with the following family: two sons, SMSgt (ret) Tim Wakefield, of New Baden, IL, Dan Wakefield and wife Christie of Bedford; two grandchildren: Joshua Wakefield, of Pittsburgh and Hannah Wakefield, of Bedford. He was preceded in death by one brother, Robert J. Wakefield, and two sisters: Martha Claar - Smith and Donna Colvin.

Perk was a 1948 graduate of Bedford High School. He served in the Army and obtained the rank of SPC 4.  He was a member of Yeager Memorial Lutheran Church and served on council and was the Asst. Sunday School Superintendent.  He worked as an insurance agent for Washington National and Kemper and then worked for Kennametal for 23 years. After his retirement he kept busy working as a groundskeeper at the Bedford Springs Golf Course.  He enjoyed watching sports, word searches, gardening, wood working and making and repairing things for other people. He loved his extended family, spending time with the Wendy’s gang and in the past his Pizza hut kids. He loved to give hugs and was a wonderful husband, father, and pappy.  He will be greatly missed. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, September 20, 2017, at 11:00 a.m., in the Chapel, at the Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home, in Bedford, with Rev. Jenny Barnes officiating.  Burial at Woods Church Cemetery, with full military rites conducted by the Fort Bedford Honor Guard.  Friends will be received on Tuesday, from 3 -5 and 6 - 8 pm, at the funeral home, and 1 hour prior to the service on Wednesday.   Those wishing can make memorial contributions in Perk’s name to the Bedford County Humane Society, 1108 Lutzville Road, Everett, PA 15537.  Our online guest book is available at www.berkebilefuneralhome.com.
