Gayle L. Reed, 98, of Bedford, died on Friday, March 30, 2018 at Bedford Colonial Courtyard. She was born on June 12, 1919, in Broad Top City, a daughter of the late Samuel W. and Jane (Jones) Leabhart. On September 22, 1939, in Chambersburg, she married William S. Reed Jr. who preceded her in death on June 14, 1986 and that ended a marriage of 47 years. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She is survived by two great nephews: Kevin O. Turner and wife Jamie of Bedford, and Mark Turner and wife Michele all of Bedford. Two great-great nephews, Justin Smith and wife Kesha and family and Jared Turner all of Bedford, one great-great niece Marissa Turner. She was preceded in death by three brothers: Walter, John, and Glenn Leabhart; two sisters, Alice Turner and Ada Mateer; one nephew, O. Gene Turner and a great nephew, Jeff Turner.
Gayle was a member of the St. John's United Church of Christ in Bedford. She worked as a secretary for Blackburn and Russell Company and at one time Barton’s Fashion Shop. She graduated from the 1st class to have radio training for the military during WWII. Some of her hobbies were golfing and traveling the world. She was a member of the Bedford Garden Club, worked for the American Cancer Society and their blood drives and volunteered at Donahoe Manor and Pennknoll Village nursing homes.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, April 3, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel, at the Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home in Bedford, with Rev. Brady Plummer officiating. Burial will be private.
