Dr. Herbert D. Snyder, 65, of Cheraw, SC, died Monday, May 9, 2016, in hospice near his former residence in Shallotte, NC.  He was born March 10, 1951, in Carlisle, the second of four sons of the late William H. Snyder, Sr., and Dorothy W. Snyder.  He was twice married, first to Janice Eyler (now Snyder-Hess) and later to Denise Yunginger (now Snyder), who was his care-giver during his last illness.  Both survive, along with the following children: Jeffrey B. Snyder, of Lancaster, Benjamin S. Snyder, of Oakland, CA, Kathryn L. Snyder, of Cape Town, South Africa, and Cole R. Snyder, of Shallotte, NC, and two grand-children: Ivy and River. He is also survived by three brothers: William, of Bedford, Edward, of Charlotte, NC, and Reginald, of Roanoke, VA; one aunt, Jane Gorman, of Bedford; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.  He nurtured his relationships with them all with kindness, thoughtfulness and endearing good humor.

Dr. Snyder was a graduate of Bedford High School and Dickinson College in Carlisle.  He completed a master of science degree in biology at Pennsylvania State University, medical school at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia (1979), internship (1980) and residency (1984) at Boston University Surgical Training Program in Boston, and two years in the United States Navy as a medical officer.  He was a board certified general surgeon.

Following his military service, he established a practice in general surgery in Lancaster, and relocated to Brunswick County in southeast NC in 1997 and to Chesterfield County, SC, in 2008.  There he maintained affiliations with Chesterfield General Hospital, Marlboro Park Hospital and Loris Healthcare System until illness led to his retirement in 2014.

A Methodist by upbringing, he was last attending services and singing in the choir at the United Methodist Church in Bennettsville, SC, before his final illness.

A memorial service will be held at the Bedford United Methodist Church on Saturday, May 21, 2016, at 12:00 p.m., with Rev. Jeff Welsch officiating.  Burial at Everett Cemetery. Arrangements by the Timothy A. Berkebile Funeral Home, in Bedford. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to SECU Hospice House of Brunswick, at 955 Mercy Lane SE, Bolivia, NC 28422.
